Le contenu du poste est libellé en anglais car il nécessite de nombreuses interactions avec nos filiales à l’international, l'anglais étant la langue de travail.


As part of the Sanofi Group responsibilities, the Head of Customs has a primarily role to guarantee a full compliance of all Sanofi operations worldwide according to the Customs regulations and Trade agreements in force.
With the objective to be externally the advocate of the Sanofi strategy he/she is also the Sanofi Group representative in regards with Customs authorities and represents Sanofi in various Customs institutions (e.g. MEDEF in France, EFPIA in Europe, …).
He/she actively designs and contributes the end to end products’ flow design (financial and physical flows) and provides optimized solutions to support the Sanofi business ambition and Corporate acquisitions or divestments projects.

The Head of Customs is also accountable for:
Managing customs and Trade compliance across the entire company, ensuring all global regulations are understood
designing and promoting global standard operating processes to all stakeholders involved in Trade and customs operations
evaluating customs risks and providing guidance on mitigation plans
following up internal or external Customs audits of processes and operations in order to make sure that Customs regulations are applied within the Sanofi organization
leading the Customs performance by setting ambitious targets and by communicating it regularly towards Senior Management
contributing to the financial objectives of Sanofi in with Customs duties optimization
Avoid Sanofi Group Tax exposure regarding customs regulations (group financial risk)
Managing hierarchically and transversally teams
Internally, he/she has significant interactions with Senior Leaders: Tax, Financial flows, Supply Chain, Insurance, Security, Legal, Procurement; External Manufacturing, …).


The main duties and responsibilities of the Head of Custom are based on the following key pillars:

Customs Strategy:
The Head of Customs build and lead the Customs’ strategy implementation according to the Group strategy, key projects and priorities, he/she is, particularly, accountable for:
the level of customs control processes to be prioritized worldwide, depending on the Trade stakes, regulations and audits findings
Maintenance of customs clearance process & trucking in time to achieve the growth and the profit objectives of the company
the selection and design of Customs systems to best fit with regulations and processes, data integrity and customs costs optimization Technical watch of best tools to be used in connection with ERP, WMS, TMS and connected IT tools either internal or external for best automation and compliance processes that allow reporting for analysis and optimization
the specifications requested to customs agents or freight forwarders in collaboration with stakeholders (e.g. Supply Chain, Procurement, …) and source the best qualified third-party customs broker to support Sanofi operations in countries
Manage and offer advice on custom legislation where necessary
Manage and assist with commercial business development, implementing changes when and where necessary

Compliance and litigations:
Thanks to a strong expertise and experience in Customs, he/she ensures that all Sanofi import and export operations and processes are compliant with the most updated regulations
He/She maintains and monitors all customs licenses and certificates, ensuring they are kept up to date
He/she is accountable for audits, internal and external, relative to Customs operations and processes
He/she is the representative vis a vis Customs authorities in France and ensure the respect of Customs rules by the Sanofi affiliates or export platforms for audits that are conducted outside France
In case of significant litigation, he/she supports the GBU/ Country in close collaboration with Legal

Relations with Customs institutions:
The Head of Customs leads or participates to various French and International committees and represents Sanofi interests with the objective to:
be the advocate of Sanofi strategy and ensure lobbying in avoiding potential risks coming from new Customs rules
get a comprehensive knowledge of new regulations in order to anticipate and accompany their implementation in Sanofi
ensure a permanent benchmark with other industries in order to leverage the Sanofi customs at the highest level in terms of compliance and performance

France : Medef, France Chimie, LEEM , AUTF, Odasce,
International: Intercept, ICC (International Chamber of Commerce), IFPMA (International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations)

Risk management:
The Head of Customs drives the risk management relative to Customs activities. With the contribution of countries, export platforms and other requested stakeholders he/she:
evaluate on a regular basis the level of customs risks on Sanofi transactions (survey, country self-assessments review, export platforms processes review)
ensure the consistency and prioritization of mitigation plans that are implemented at platform or country level
bring a Senior support to export platforms or countries on critical findings
warn stakeholders and communicate to Senior management on critical risks and mitigation plans with the end objective to avoid any litigation with Customs authorities.
The geographical scope is worldwide, for all GBUs, SARD, Sanofi Pasteur with a focus on export platforms and critical countries in terms of customs duties or import/export transactions complexity.

Customs processes:
The Head of Customs elaborates global guidance in particular regarding customs nomenclature, country of origin management, incoterms, value of goods, samples and free of charge deliveries as well as trade documents.
He/she ensures the communication of those SOPs within the Sanofi network as well as training sessions to key stakeholders in countries or export platforms who are responsible for their implementation.

Product sourcing and flows:
In accordance with the Sanofi strategy, he/she is the business partner of the GBUs, Finance, Industrial Affairs and R&D, Sanofi Pasteur requiring a Customs expertise for:
product launches
new sourcing

M&A (acquisition or divestment) projects
and any change of product flows (e.g. linked to production transfer)
In this respect, he contributes to the design of the end to end products’ flows and he validates the Customs specifications in case of systems changes.

Performance and customs duties optimization:
He/she has the objective to raise the Customs function at the highest level of performance based on consistent KPIs. He/she is in charge to communicate regularly to the Senior management with adapted dashboard.

In full respect of Customs regulations and with the contribution of the Finance function, the Head of Customs has the responsibilities:
to ensure that Sanofi calculates consistently its customs duties
and to look for customs duties optimization by using specific customs regime (duty suspensions, drawback, BWH) and free trade agreements



Master’s degree in Customs or International Trade Management
A strong knowledge and experience UK, US, EU and International Customs regulations
Minimum 15 years of Customs responsibilities specifically in an international industry
A proven previous experience in a customs and VAT multinational environment is essential for this role
Previous exposure to the development of business policies and process governance
Significant experience in working alongside international government agencies


Global picture and strategic thinking capabilities combined with operational execution follow up and project’s management skills
Capability to work in an international organization with multiple GBUs and clients, dealing with Countries/ Regions/Global stakeholders
A Strong sense of responsibility and great leadership skills are essential as well as written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrate managerial skills capabilities
Strong team management experience : ability to influence stakeholders internally and externally
Team worker having solid organizational skills and ability to work with multiple deadlines
Strong influencing and consensus-building skills
Capacity to manage smoothly deadlines and time pressure along with intrinsic technical / resource constraints
Results and performance oriented
Fluent in French is a requisite

External: Customs and International Trade organizations (particularly the European Union Commission)
